A large construction project resulted in a fatality due to an accident involving a piece of industrial equipment. The equipment recorded sensor data including pressure, temperature, and inclination at per-second intervals.
Based on review of available hydraulic and electrical schematics, I was able to figure out the data schema of the non-standard log files and analyze several months worth of equipment behaviour, involving 82,000 rows of data. This allowed comparison of normal equipment operation to behaviour at the time of loss, as well as development of a defensible sequence of events leading up to the loss. The analysis findings were presented to the client, and also benefited the multi-disciplinary team working on other aspects of this large loss.
